Import a JDM car (25-year rule)
Japanese-market cars can come into the US once they are 25 years old. Here is how it works, and where to buy one with $100 off your first car.

How the 25-year rule works
- A car at least 25 years old, counted from its manufacture month and year, not its model year, can be imported without meeting US safety standards.
- Newer cars that were never sold in the US need a Registered Importer, NHTSA eligibility and a bond, so most buyers wait for the 25-year mark.
- Emissions and state registration rules still apply. Check your state, and California smog rules in particular, before you buy.
This is a general guide, not legal advice. See the NHTSA import FAQ.
